Cowen Design Group served as the Civil Engineer and Landscape Architect of Record for the New Office Annex project for the U.S. Embassy Compound in Kampala, Uganda. The project included integrating the connected annex building into the existing office building, the addition of a new underground parking garage, significant tree preservation areas, and the re-arranging of the majority of the site infrastructure.

The U.S. Embassy Compound in Kampala, Uganda is located on a sloping terrain above the central valley through the city of Kampala. The climate and abundance of plant life creates a tropical garden palette of softscape and trees which provide refuge in shade and screening. The modifications to the site associated with the new office annex progresses these elements and incorporates them into improved and integrated stormwater management facilities. A new dining terrace and outdoor canopies provide a needed expansion for the Embassy to address special events and gatherings. Given the ongoing operations of the embassy, it was critical to analyze the phased nature of the construction to assure infrastructure was connected and commissioned in such a way so as to avoid outages and allow for full mission capabilities.
